| Construction is the building of structures such as bridges, buildings,
tunnels, roads, dams, canals and airports. The construction process utilizes
people, information, materials, equipment, energy, capital and time to produce
an end product which is a structure. Construction is an important component
of our economy. Today, over six million people are employed in the Construction
Industry in the United States. They produce well over a hundred billion
dollars in goods and services in this country each year.
The general population including homeowners, industry, government and
other public institutions (schools, hospitals, libraries, museums, etc)
all utilize construction technology. Since the beginning of civilization
man has built structures to live, work and play in. The need for skilled
builders, engineers and architects is as universally important today as
it was in the past.
The Curriculum in Construction Technology is designed to enable the student
to understand the major aspects of the Construction Industry. Emphasis
is placed not only on the development of necessary skills but also on
basic construction technologies and materials. In addition, the program
examines the relationships of other trades to the Construction Industry,
and the application of the appropriate building codes. These are all accomplished
through hands-on laboratory experiences and comprehensive theory based
sessions.
The various people employed by this industry include architects, civil
engineers, structural engineers, contractors, estimators, project managers,
and trades people. There is a shortage of qualified people in many areas
of the Construction Industry throughout the country. The future job outlook
for this industry is indeed bright.
