| Computer Science is, simply put, the study of computation. One of its
most fundamental concepts is the algorithm. An algorithm is a precise sequence
of instructions. A computer program is an executable algorithm. For example,
there is a precise sequence of instructions one can follow to have a VCR
tape a show at midnight. The inclusion of the word 'computer' in the name
of the dicipline identifies only one aspect of what we study. The origin
of the name is due to the fact that high speed electronic computers created
the need to study computation. As computers, their associated programs and
infrastructure grew, their applications in today's society also grew and
have effected virtually all of us in our daily lives. Computer Science is
used by numerous professions including mathematicians, scientists and engineers.
Mathematics, the origins of Computer Science, provides reason and logic.
Science provides the methodology for learning and refinement. Engineering
provides the techniques for building hardware and software.
In today's information based society, the need for real time data makes
the need for Computer Science ever more critical.Everyone from family
households to small businesses to the largest international corporations
utilize computers and computer networks. The most most obvious application
of the we all know as the "Internet" or the "World-Wide-Web."
The computer science department serves the needs of two types of students:
the student who plans to attend a four-year university and pursue a bachelor's
degree in computer science, and the student who is planning to seek employment
immediately after graduation from Don Bosco Tech. This is accomplished
through rigorous academic courses in structured programming and a complete
introduction to microcomputer technology and database design. For students
who desire real world skills and a need to quickly upgrade their marketability
for employment, we offer hands-on laboratory assignments in all classes
and preparation for three industry certifications including CompTIA A+,
CompTIA Network+, and Microsoft Certified System Engineer(MCSE). Students
in this department develop a level of experience and understanding to
pursue many opportunities leading to careers as computer scientists and
engineers, software engineer, database designers and administrators , hardware
technicians, software engineer, and network specialists.
