Guided
by Christ’s teaching to love our neighbor, and illustrated by Don Bosco’s
example of loving kindness, Don Bosco Technical Institute (DBTI) develops young
men of all faiths who:
- Understand the importance of service to
the local, national, and world communities1
- Are
motivated to lead lives of distinguished service2
In
order to achieve this, DBTI’s Christian Service Program enables students to
volunteer their time in service of others by meeting the following requirements:
- Each
student must complete a minimum of 25 hours of Christian Service per
year, with at least 15 of these hours being performed off campus. This
service is meant to benefit the student’s local church, neighborhood, the
needy, and/or the Bosco-Tech community. If a student is already completing
Christian Service for another organization, such as a parish Confirmation
program, the Boy Scouts, etc., and the hours satisfy these requirements,
they may be approved by the Coordinator for Youth Ministry (CYM). Only
hours that have been completed from September 1st through March
31st of the current school-year will be considered. A student
may not earn Christian Service hours for jobs or tasks that he is being
paid for. Fundraising activities and individual class projects may not be
included
- Approval
by the CYM is required for all Christian Service before they are begun.
- Completion
of the Christian Service Hours form after all hours are completed.
- All
service hours are to be completed by the end of the 3rd quarter
of the school year.
Besides
these requirements, a report, filed at the end of the 1st and 2nd
quarters, is required to be filed to the CYM by all students containing:
- Details
of the status of the student’s service including:
- hours
completed,
- location(s)
worked at,
- activity(ies)
performed, and
- comments
from the active supervisor(s), and
- A
one-page (250 word) typed, double-spaced essay explaining the positive
outcomes of the project, by explaining how the project(s) he has chosen:
- serves
others,
- benefits
a neighborhood or community (photographs may be included),
- has
helped him grow in the Spiritual life.
Students
who do not maintain an active service project, or who fail to complete it, will
be placed on probation. The student will remain on probations until he
completes all the requirements. Enrollment in the following school-year assumes
the successful completion of the previous year’s Christian Service
requirements. A senior who does not complete his Christian Service requirement
is ineligible for graduation, and other end-of-the-year senior activities
including Prom and Grad-Night.
Because
we believe that a positive experience of Christian Service is essential in the
development of growth in the Spiritual life, we provide this opportunity for
our students. With support from the entire school community; parents, teachers,
administrators; our students will learn the truth of these words from the
letter of James (2:15-17): “If a brother or sister has nothing to wear and has no
food for the day, and one of you says to them “Go in peace, keep warm, and eat
well,” but you do not give them the necessities of the body, what good is it? So
also, faith of itself, if it does not have works, is dead.”
